The Impact of Breast Cancer on African American Women

• Breast Cancer is the most common cancer among African American women, but we are underrepresented in research.

• Breast cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer death among African-American women, exceeded only by lung cancer.

• An estimated 27,060 new cases of breast cancer and 6,080 deaths are expected to occur in African American women in 2015.

• Breast cancer mortality (death) is 41% higher in African American women than in white women.

Without African Americans or other minority involvement in the search for a cure, researchers will not be able to develop treatments that benefit different groups of people.
